What is an Anxiety Disorder?
We all have a fight-or-flight response which is our ability to respond to a challenging situation. Stress is part of life. However, if worry and stress are taking over, and your fears are interfering with your everyday life, you may have an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are very common and present themselves in several ways.
Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the most common anxiety disorders. Anxiety causes pervasive worry about everyday concerns such as work, family health, and even something simple like making an appointment or paying a bill. It can make you feel tense, tired, and on-edge, all at the same time.
Panic disorder is another common anxiety disorder and it’s characterized by panic attacks, which are episodes of extreme psychological and physical distress. You might experience fear of impending doom and being out of control.
Physical symptoms of a panic attack can be:
A racing or pounding heart
Problem breathing
Sweating
Dizziness
Chest pain
Trembling
Numb or tingling hands
Abdominal pain or nausea
Social anxiety disorder is also a common anxiety disorder. If you have a social anxiety disorder, social interactions and situations can trigger your fears and nervousness. Feelings stemming from a fear of humiliation or being judged negatively, can make you avoid social situations and interfere with your ability to function at school or work.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are also mental health conditions that also present with anxiety and insomnia.
