Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a chronic neuropsychological condition that can interfere with healthy human development. ADHD can make it difficult for one to function socially, academically, in the workplace and even in one’s home environment. It can also cause one to feel restless and impulsive.

Children, teens, and adults with ADHD may also:

  • Be easily distracted

  • Have trouble concentrating or focusing

  • Interrupt others during a conversation

  • Have difficulty following directions or staying organized

  • Find it hard to sit still for a period of time

  • Struggle socially

These are just a few examples of how ADHD can present in one’s life….

Everyone has trouble controlling impulses or focusing now and then. However, if your symptoms interfere with your ability to function in daily activities, or if the behavior is disrupting your home life, you may need a professional to help you or family members learn techniques to better cope with your symptoms.

The cause of ADHD is currently unknown. It is known that genetics and nervous system dysfunction play an important role.

In addition, scientists are studying other possible causes including:

  • Lead exposure

  • Alcohol and Tobacco use during pregnancy

  • Brain anatomy and function

  • Premature birth

  • Brain Injury

  • Low birth weight

Nervous system dysfunction is also thought to play a role in developing ADHD.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

Many times Juliet can diagnose ADHD after obtaining and extensively reviewing your history of symptoms and behaviors. She may order additional testing, including blood work to rule out underlying medical conditions. Psychological or psycho-educational testing may also be recommended.

At Feel Good Concierge, specific screening tools are administered that can help confirm an ADHD diagnosis.

What treatments are available for ADHD?

Every client is unique and requires a personalized treatment plan to achieve the best results. In some cases, therapy, academic coaching, lifestyle modifications, and/or diet changes may be recommended. Medication can also be beneficial in helping patients succeed.

Medications can be useful in balancing brain chemicals to reduce inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. When medications are prescribed, Juliet closely monitors every aspect of ADHD treatment and overall health. Sometimes, frequent changes to the type or dose of medications are necessary to achieve long-term symptom relief.

Because ADHD affects all aspects of life, Julie offers other appropriate interventions and resources to ensure you have the best possible support system. Juliet is also very open to communicating with family members or other healthcare providers to create the best plan for individual needs.
